Delhi might be headed for President’s Rule, as the two leading parties in the city have refused to form a government, citing lack of a majority.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said, after a core committee meeting on Monday, it would not stake a claim to form the government but would rather sit in opposition. The AAP said it was the responsibility of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to stake a claim to form the government, as it had won the highest number of seats.
The BJP, with 31 seats, was the single largest party in a House of 70. But it needed five more to reach the magic number of 36. The AAP bagged 28 seats and the Congress eight. BJP ally Akali Dal, the Janata Dal (United) and an independent candidate have a seat each.
AAP leaders met at the house of party leader Arvind Kejriwal in Ghaziabad. After the meeting, AAP senior functionary Yogendra Yadav said it would decline any invitation to form the government, as it lacked a majority.
Yadav expressed surprise on why the BJP was not willing to form a government. He reiterated the stand taken by the party to not take the support of the Congress to form one.
BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan had said last night he would not stake a claim to form the government, as his party was short of a clear majority. He had said he would prefer to sit in the opposition than horse trading.
