The Election Commission on Monday announced election to the Delhi Assembly would be held on February 7 and the counting of votes would take place on February 10.
Delhi, which was granted partial statehood in 1991, has witnessed five Assembly elections since 1993 — the first, in 1952, for a 48-member house. The Assembly was disbanded in 1956, and Delhi was made a Union Territory. In 1966, the Delhi Metropolitan Council was set up as an elected body to advise the Lieutenant Governor. The Bharatiya Janata Party's L K Advani served as the first chairman of the first elected council, from 1967 to 1970. The Delhi Legislative Assembly replaced the Council in 1993 but three subjects — public order, land and police — remained outside its purview, as against nine that were beyond the Council’s ambit.
