Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former home secretary R K Singh on Thursday criticised the Congress Party for demanding a ban of the broadcast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on Sunday, saying the government can't stop functioning because of the latter.

"The Congress ban is baseless and nonsense," he said.

Speaking to ANI, Singh said, "PM Modi has been addressing the nation as a PM, not as a political leader. He wants to communicate the government's policies to the people, not the political stuff."

The Congress Party had approached the Election Commission on Wednesday with a demand for a ban of the 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, citing the Model Code of Conduct that is in place for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, as the prime reason. The Election Commission has, however, rejected this demand.
