Rarely have there been protests whose outcome has satisfied all involved. One such is the farmers’ sit-in in Karnal. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the confederation of farmer pressure groups, on Saturday ended its five-day protests in the constituency of the Haryana chief minister, M L Khattar, after the state government assured a probe into the August 28 police action, and two contractual jobs to the family of the deceased farmer, Sushil Kajal.

According to political experts, the outcome of the protests has not only brought victory to the farmers but also served the cause of the ruling party.
