Is Mumbai now another Delhi? Seven forgotten rape cases of 2013

Rape cases have badly tarnished India's image abroad

BS Reporter New Delhi
When the December 16 gang-rape and murder of a Delhi medical student made headlines, residents of the Maximum City probably thought such a thing could never happen in their metropolis. On Thursday, this belief was shattered for the eighth time, when a photojournalist in her early 20s was gang-raped by five men at around 6 pm, while on assignment with a male colleague.

According to police, the victim of Thursday's assault worked with a Mumbai-based English magazine and had gone to the Shakti Mills - a former textile mill that now lies abandoned and in ruins - for a photo shoot.

Mumbai saw a huge 45% rise in sexual harassment cases in 2012, even as incidents of rape and sexual assault also grew, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau released in June 2013.

The attack has led to outrage across the country with many taking to social media to express their anger.
