Around 12,000 workers of the company are on indefinite strike over wage hike

T E Narasimhan Chennai
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today asked the Prime Minister to intervene in the ongoing labour issue at Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC).

Around 12,000 workers of the company are on indefinite strike from July 20, 2015 demanding higher wages.

She said that Neyveli Lignite is one of the main sources of power for Tamil Nadu, and the state procures about 1,450 Mega Watts of power from the company.

"I have been given to understand that the wage settlement for NLC workers is due from 1.1.2012 and though they have been given interim relief in June, 2014, their wage settlement has not been made so far. I have also been informed that NLC is a profit making Public Sector Undertaking," said Jayalalithaa in her letter.

She asked the Prime Minister to instruct the Coal ministry to immediately look into the grievances of the NLC workers and settle the issue amicably at the earliest to ensure uninterrupted power supply to Tamil Nadu.
