Oram is one of the vice-presidents of the BJP. He is the party’s Scheduled Tribe face in the Modi Cabinet. He is also the president of BJP’s Odisha unit and, therefore, represents his state as also tribals in the Union Cabinet.

He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998 and then in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 from Sundargarh (reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidate) constituency. He is the BJP’s only Lok Sabha candidate who won from Odisha. The rest 20 seats were won by the Biju Janata Dal. Oram, along with Dharmendra Pradhan, will be the two ministers from Odisha in the Cabinet. Pradhan will be a minister of state with independent charge.

Born in a poor tribal family at Kendudihi, a village in Odisha's Sundargarh district, Oram created history when he became the first Union tribal affairs minister. Oram has a diploma in electrical engineering and worked for five years with Bhel, before he decided to quit and join politics.
