Uttar Pradesh's ruling BJP on Thursday stared at a major electoral upset with the joint Opposition candidate, RLD's Tabassum Hasan, leading by over 39,000 votes in the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency. 
 
Hasan, supported by the Congress, SP and the BSP, established an early lead over BJP's Mriganka Singh right from the beginning to establish an almost invincible lead by noon. After 17 rounds of counting, Hasan polled 321,311 votes, while Mriganka Singh got 282,289 votes, the election office said.

Kerala's ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front's (LDF's) Saji Cheriyan on Thursday won the Chengannur Assembly bypoll by a huge margin of 20,956 votes over his nearest Congress rival, officials said. According to the Chief Electoral Office, Cheriyan polled 67,303 votes while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate D Vijaykumar got 46,347 votes and BJP's P S Sreedharan Pillai came third with 35,270 votes.

The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is set to wrest an Assembly seat from the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) in Bihar where it was leading by over 34,000 votes, officials said on Thursday.
 
After trailing in the initial round of counting, the RJD established a comfortable lead of over 31,000 against JD-U in the bypolls to the Jokihat Assembly seat in Bihar on Thursday, according to the Election Commission officials.

The votes would be counted over 15 rounds, an election official said.
