With “a Congress-mukt India” slogan, Gujarat chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poll panel chief Narendra Modi on Sunday kicked off the saffron party's 2014 election campaign from here.

Addressing the Nava Bharata Yuvabheri (youth convention for a new India) conclave at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here, Modi said the Congress had become a burden for this country.

“The Congress has snatched food from the poor’s mouth. It talks about inclusive growth but where has this come from overnight? It is because the Congress has excluded everyone from development and growth since the past 60 years,” he said.

Slamming the Congress for the falling rupee, Modi said the rupee was on a par with the dollar when India got Independence. Courtesy the Congress, where is the rupee now, he asked.

“Advani had tried bringing back the country’s black money that was in foreign banks. To whom does that money belong to? Who has been in power for all these years, when black money running into billions was accumulated?” he said.

Accusing the Congress of not taking border issues seriously, Modi said the government was not responding even after Pakistan was committing one transgression after another.

"While Pakistan was killing our soldiers, our Union minister went to Jaipur and fed the Pakistan entourage with biryani. The same is the case with China. When China intruded into our borders, India says it is holding peace talks with them. It is clear that the Delhi government is not concerned about the Indian public and is unable to provide proper security to its citizens," he said. On the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Modi said the BJP was always in favour of Telangana but not at the cost of Seemandhra.

"For us, Telangana is as important as Seemandhra. BJP wants and demands development of both Telangana and Seemandhra. The Congress is turning brothers against brothers; BJP will not allow that," he said, adding he wished Telangana and Seemandhra outpaced Gujarat in terms of development.
