The Indian Prime Minister will address the UNGA first, followed by bilateral talks with President Obama

BS Web Team Mumbai
The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to reach US later tonight, where he will address the UN General Assembly and also hold one-on-one bilateral talks with US President Barack Obama.

This will be Modi’s first US visit since the 2002 riots, shortly after which the US State Department decided not to give him a visa to visit that country for his role in the violence.

Since his election as India’s Prime Minister, however, the US government has changed its stance and has said Modi was welcome to visit the US in his capacity as the premier.

Modi will address the UNGA on the afternoon on September 27 –sixth in line among heads of state who will address the gathering – and hold bilateral meetings with other heads of states at the hotel. The government has also not yet decided on whether he will hold bilateral talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the UNGA, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday. Modi will, however, meet with US business leaders after his UNGA address.

Modi is also scheduled to meet former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the topic of discussion will be about smart city projects and its feasibility.
