Addressing a rally here today, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said that despite having been in power for the past 60 years, the Gandhi family had failed to get people rid of poverty.
"Only one family is responsible for the poverty in the country. Despite having been in power for the last 60 years, the people are still suffering from the poverty," he said.
Modi also said in every corner of this country, the people are getting aggressive to throw the current government out of power. The 2014 elections are not going to be fought by political parties or any personality. But it will be the public, who will fight these elections.
Referring to the Ganga Action Plan project, Modi said, "In the past, river Ganga always featured in discussions on India. For others Ganga will just be a river, but for us, it is our mother. In the process of its decontamination, there have been several budgets, plans and committees made especially for it. But we are not able to ascertain whether the rupee has also started flowing into it."
"To clean Ganga, you have to first clean Delhi and Lucknow," Modi added.
"The UPA Government with all of its enthusiasm started a project for Ganga decontamination and advertised it. People started to believe that something will happen now. But this government hasn't done anything besides chairing three meetings," Modi said. They have been asking for votes in the name of the Ganga since Rajiv Gandh. They tried to improve their image through Ganga decontamination project. Crores of rupees have been spent in the name of Ganga. People are now asking for an account of the money spent for the Ganga decontamination drive," Modi added.
Stating that he is not here to make false promises, he said, "We are equipped with intentions instead of promises. And we are capable of fulfilling our intentions."
"In Indian politics, Uttar Pradesh is important because without it no alliance will be able to form the government. This thinking is insulting to the people of UP. Is UP only to be used for political gains? Will it be only used for forming the government? My thinking is not narrow. If the country wants stability, then it won't be able to achieve it without UP," he said.
