A heavy turnout saw voters still exercising their franchise at 6.45 pm in Delhi where polling was to have ended at 5 pm Wednesday. The election commission extended the time of voting as around one lakh people were still standing in queues waiting for their turn to vote, said commission official Neeraj Bharati.

Polling which began on a sluggish note picked up after 3 p.m.

A record 70%  turnout was expected in Delhi, an election commission official said, attributing it to brisk voting in the last two hours.

"The way polling has gone till now, there is no doubt the percentage might cross 70 percent," the official told IANS.

Till 6 p.m. 66%  polling was recorded. There are nearly 11.9 million voters in the capital.
