Sarbananda Sonowal quit the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to join the BJP in 2011. He is currently the Bharatiya Janata Party state president. Sonowal hails from the tea tribes which are yet to get the Scheduled Tribes status.
Sonowal defeated Union Minister Ranee Narah in Lakhimpur constituency. He is credited with the BJP’s victory in seven of the 14 seats in Assam, increasing the BJP’s vote share in Assam to 35 per cent, which also meant his former party, the AGP, was decimated. AGP won only four per cent vote share and no seats.
"My priority is Assam's all-round development, besides zero tolerance for the illegal migrants and complete sealing of Indo-Bangla border," Sonowal said.
