Shripad Yesso Naik was the minister of state for agriculture, civil aviation in the earlier NDA government.

Naik hails from the backward community of Bhandara that comprises 15 per cent of the Goan population.

Naik is also seen as a rival to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. His inclusion in the cabinet as MoS (independent charge) is being seen as a slight to Parrikar, who was seen as much too visible during the BJP meeting in September 2013 where Narendra Modi was anointed as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.

Naik was the Goa BJP unit chief from 1990 to 1995, MLA in the Goa Assembly and head of BJP legislature party in 1995-96. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999.
