The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the trial against Tamil Nadu Chief J. Jayalalithaa over illegal assets case.
The case was filed in 1996 by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government which came to power after Jayalalithaa's exit as the state Chief Minister.
Jayalalithaa and three others were charged for garnering assets amounting to 66 crores rupees which did not match her own sources of income at that time.
On May 26, the Supreme Court had stayed the trial in the case till June 6.
Jayalalithaa had requested the court not go ahead with the trial till the ownership of the immovable assets was not decided by the Madras High Court.
In major setback to her the Supreme Court has refused to accept her plea and ordered resumption of the case.
