Raising new issues before the crisis-ridden United Democratic Front (UDF ) ministry in the state, former minister for Forest, Sports and Cinema K B Ganesh Kumar has resigned as MLA. He has sent his resignation to party chairman R Balakrishna Pillai, but the letter has not been sent to the Speaker for formal acceptance. If the resignation is accepted the strength of UDF in the Assembly will come down to 72. The magic figure for majority is 71.

The MLA from Pathanapuram constituency is believed to have taken the action because he was disgruntled at not being given a ministerial berth even after the controversies, in which he was involved had died down. He resigned from the Cabinet on April 1.
