Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today resigned from his Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, the constituency he had consecutively been representing for five terms since 1998.

UP deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya also resigned from his Phoolpur (Allahabad) parliamentary seat. They submitted their respective resignations during their visit to the national capital. On September 8, the two leaders were elected unopposed to the state Vidhan Parishad (legislative council).

The opposition had not fielded their candidates since the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enjoyed brute majority to ensure comfortable victory to all of its five candidates in the Vidhan Parishad polls
