With the maturing of the Indian telecom business, mobile service providers have realized the need to focus on the core business of managing subscribers. “Today’s product’s have a life cycle of not more than one month or so. Therefore, the focus of operators have shifted from managing all service and equipment by itself to outsourcing to the business entities who have the core expertise in handling them,” said Mr. Manoranjan ‘Mao’ Mohapatra, CEO, Comviva while delivering thekey note address at International Conference on Managed Services India 2009 organised by Bharat Exhibitions.

Today the managed services are pegged at USD 16 billion with a growth rate of over 10 per cent year on year. “The managed service segment of the telecom industry has recently started attracting telecom equipment vendors who by offering their existing competencies are able to take a new role in the value chain of operators business. In India managed services segment of telecom sector is around USD 3 billion and is growing at an annual  rate of  around 19 per cent,” Mr. Shashidharan, managing director, BE Expositions Pvt. Ltd. According to him vendors are covering activities such as network build, including planning and design, field operations, Network Operation Center (NOC) operations, application & service development, and billing. In recent years, operator awareness of Managed Services has increased significantly and Managed Services is now beginning to be a standard element of telecom operator procurement processes.

During the day long Conference telecom experts identified opportunities & the challenges being faced by this sector.  While the biggest opportunity for the operator is that once the management of equipment is passed over the equipment vendor, there is enough time for the operator to mange the its core business that of providing services to its subscribers, instead of trying to invest time in learning the equipment management,” said Mr. Shyam Prabhakar Mardikar, Vice President, Network Planning Services, Bharti Airtel Limited.

The biggest challenge on the other hand is the of entrusting an external business entity to handle and manage your equipment. “Despite having a large work force, even Public Sector Units (PSUs) like MTNL have opted to out source several of our service,” said Mr. Kuldip Singh, Director, Technical, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited.

Top level experts from BSNL, Tech Mahindra, Tata Communications, Alcatel-Lucent, Juniper Networks, ECI Telecom,  Huawei Telecommunications were among the other participants in the day-long conference.
