The legendary supercar from Porsche, the Carrera GT, which continues to inspire awe amongst enthusiasts till today, is on display at the Porsche Centre Mumbai. The Carrera GT was unveiled on 28 September 2000 as a prototype at the Paris Motor Show and was discontinued from production in May 2006, after a total of 1,270 units were produced. The stunning silver Carrera GT will be in Mumbai till mid–January 2009 before it leaves to take up its coveted place at the soon to open Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen.

At first glance, the optics and overall build of the Carrera GT betray that its origin lies in motor sport. Porsche's iconic sports car creation has a thoroughbred racing engine. The ten-cylinder engine with dry-sump lubrication is based on the 5.5 litre V10 naturally-aspirated engine that was developed especially for racing activities. To suit mass production, technicians at the Development Centre in Weissach had increased the displacement to 5.7 litres. The maximum output is 450 kW (612 hp) at 8,000 rpm, the maximum torque 590 Nm (437 ftlb.).

The Carrera GT introduced totally new dimensions in terms of driving performance. It could attain a maximum speed of 330 kilometres per hour and accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The Carrera GT completed the blue-ribband sprint from zero to 200 km/h in 9.9 seconds. An individually developed, manual gearbox, comprising six gears, ensured optimal transmission of the drive power. The celebrated Porsche roadster possesses a simple-operation roof system. It consists of two individual carbon-fibre, lightweight shells (each weighs only 2.4 kilograms), which can be accommodated in the front luggage compartment.

The high performance sports car, developed at the research and development centre in Weissach, advanced into new dimensions with its performance characteristics and goes beyond any previously known limits of sports car manufacturing. It was the first production vehicle in the world to have a chassis and engine frame made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic, as well as a ceramic composite clutch for power transmission. The Carrera GT is decelerated by the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). Porsche has supplied this component since 2001 and is the first manufacturer to include it in a mass-produced vehicle (GT2).

The Carrera GT was the first production car in the world to run on forged magnesium wheels, saving 25 percent in weight compared to aluminium alloys and featuring outstanding durability. The legendary car was also the fastest car to lap the Nürburgring North Circuit. With the clock showing 7’32.44 minutes, the Carrera GT completed the 22.6 km long round in the Eifel at an average speed of 164 km/h.
