Schools join the Temple, Gurdwara and Church in echoing Nanhi Chhaan’s clarion call

Nanhi Chhaan Foundation, a not-for-profit organization having the twin goals of restoring the gender ratio and increasing tree cover in the country today launched its movement with the blessings of Dargah Sharif and the involvement of schools.  The twin objectives lie within the larger causes of women’s empowerment and Environmental protection.

The issue of adverse gender ratio as well as deforestation has become very acute and if not corrected can result in unmanageable consequences.  A strong campaign is needed for correcting the National gender ratio of 915 girls for 1000 boys to a level where girls and boys are in equal numbers.  Similarly, the National targeted one third forest cover by 2012 requires a big plantation drive to save our environment from unacceptably low levels of forest cover.

The Nanhi Chhaan Foundation has inspiringly connected these two issues as respecting motherhood.  The girl child is mother to mankind and trees are Mother Earth’s greatest gift to the Planet.

In order to seek blessing from the Dargah for the above noble objectives, Mr. Salman Khurshid, Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for Corporate and for Minority Affairs, Mr. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Hon’ble Minister of State for Commerce and Industry along with Hazi Gulam Qibriya and Nazim Ahmed Raza of the Dargah and Mr. Harpal Singh, Chairman, Nanhi Chhaan Foundation and Impact Group launched the movement from the holy sanctum of Dargah Sharif by seeking blessings from the Dargah in a function organized at the Mehfil Khana.  All spoke strongly in support of the Nanhi Chhan movement and requested everyone to spread the  twin objectives of the Nanhi Chhaan Foundation in order to save humanity.  Mr Khurshid said: “Little girls who grow up to be Mothers and trees who are one of Nature’s greatest gifts from Mother Earth require protection and preservation for the sustenance of life on Planet Earth. Both are universal mothers whose protection is vital and imperative.”

Mr Harpal Singh added: “By using the positive power of all Faiths, we appeal to all cross sections of Indian society to help restore Nature’s balance.  It is inspiring to see schools, industry, banks and NGOs coming forward to help the cause.  Nanhi Chhaan is becoming a movement that is capturing the citizens’ hearts and minds”.

Nanhi Chhaan also organized a programme at the renowned Mayo College Girls’ School later in the day wherein Mr. Salman Khurshid, Mr. Joyotiraditya M. Scindia, Mr. Ajay Vikram Singh and Mr. Harpal Singh talked about the objectives of the Nanhi Chhaan Foundation to students and encouraged them to spread awareness on the noble objectives among their fellow beings and the community.  Girl child protection and the planting of trees must be discussed and acted upon by parents, villagers and the community in general.  “Only a mass movement of National magnitude can change the cause to restore Nature’s balance” was the invocation of Mr. Scindia.

Students from schools in Ajmer and Jaipur performed skits on Nanhi Chhaan themes and Ms Zila Khan rendered an invocation song.  Saplings were distributed to students representing several schools/colleges.  Mr. Harpal Singh also announced that a Kiosk outside the Mayo College will be distributing saplings to all 1500 students present in the hall and Nanhi Chhaan will set up Kiosks at other participating schools in Ajmer on the next day to distribute saplings to the students of those institutions as well.  Students and guests also signed their support on the signature walls set up on the occasion.

Many important persons like Mr. Rajendra Pawar, CMD, NIIT, Mr. Shivinder Mohan Singh, Managing Director, Fortis Healthcare Ltd, Mr. Salil Singhal, Chairman, Secure Meters Ltd and Heads of many institutions showed their support by being present at the function.

A programme for starting a Nanhi Chhaan Club in all the schools has been formulated and these Clubs will undertake to continually initiate activities that raise awareness, develop  plans for tree plantation, organize debates on all aspects of these critical items on the social agenda of the country.

Mr. Singh informed that since the launch of Nanhi Chhaan in August 2008, about 8.00 Lac saplings have been distributed from different places in Punjab, Delhi and Rajasthan.  Nanhi Chhaan was also launched nationally from the platform of CRPF, NDTV-Greenathon and the CII.  Nanhi Chhaan intends to continue its progress by launching similar initiatives from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and subsequently from other States of the country.  We will not stop till it has not become a National movement and addressed the challenges of women’s empowerment and Environmental protection in a wholesome manner, Dargah Sharif calls for protection of daughters and trees
