The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the world’s second largest professional society for engineering and technology, is hosting an international conference today in New Delhi to discuss the present scenario in country around Smart Grid technology.

The day-long conference will bring together renowned experts like Professor John Scott (Director – Network Innovation, KEMA Consulting), Prakash B Nayak (President - Power Systems, ABB Limited), Reji Kumar Pillai (Head – Energy & Utilities Industry, IBM India), Ranjeet Vaishnav (Solution Architect - Energy & Utilities, Tata Consultancy Services).

A Smart Grid is an electricity network that can intelligently integrate generators and consumers to balance supply and demand. The future system will enable the delivery of electricity that is sustainable, economic and secure. Communication, IT and Power technologies work together to establish a comprehensive power infrastructure that can accommodate the diverse energy needs of the 21 century by balancing demand and supply on a minute-by-minute basis. Smart grids allow much greater robustness, efficiency and flexibility than today’s power systems.

Commenting on the occasion Shekhar Sanyal, Country Head, IET India, said, “Effective management of power infrastructure is key for an emerging economy like India which is among top 10 energy consumers in the world. As Smart Grid technology takes a step towards becoming a reality in India with Union Government’s initiatives, we feel it is the right time to highlight the opportunities and challenges in terms of infrastructure, industry, regulatory and compliance issues.”
