IT, Auto sector witness highest job index ever in Mar-11: survey

  • On an overall level, the Naukri Job Speak index at 1085 is at its highest ever since inception in Jul-08 
  • The job index for Mumbai at 1009 has surpassed the pre slowdown levels(Jul-08) for the first time in Mar-11

The first quarter of the 2011 witnessed a healthy hiring sentiment as the Naukri job speak index for Mar-11 at 1085 as compared to 1050 in Feb-11 is 8.5% above the Jul-08 levels.  The index for IT sector at 1198 in Mar-11 is 91% higher than the May-09 levels where the index dipped to an all time low of 626. Similarly, the Auto sector also clocked impressive growth figures in Mar-11 with the index at 1124 being 119% above the Jan-09 figures where the index dipped to 512. This also dovetails with the optimism in the Naukri Hiring Outlook Survey where 82% of recruiters from the IT sector and 85% recruiters from the Auto sector had anticipated that new jobs will be created in the first half of 2011. 

 

Hitesh Oberoi, CEO and MD, Info Edge India said “The hiring activity during the first few months of 2011 has been more widespread than in the past couple of years, as all key industry sectors have started rebuilding their staff strength and gearing up for an optimistic FY 2011-12.”

Industry Sector Analysis:
An in-depth analysis of the indices shows that all the top industry sectors barring Construction and Engineering have registered positive monthly growths in Mar-11 as compared to Feb-11.  Auto, IT and ITES sector witnessed maximum movement in the employment front both monthly as well as annually as the index moved up by 7%, 6% and 5% respectively in Mar-11 over Feb-11 and by 27%, 34% and 10% in Mar-11 over Mar-10. Construction and Engineering saw a 6% monthly dip in hiring activity whereas Oil and Gas, Telecom and Banking sectors saw their job indices moving up by 4% respectively in Mar-11 over Feb-11.

Functional Area Analysis:
The hottest skill sets for the month of Mar-11 were professionals in Production and ITES where the index moved up by 10% and 9% respectively as compared Feb-11. The demand for professionals in HR, Accounts, Sales, and IT moved up within the range of 3% and 5% in Mar-11 over Feb-11.

City Wise Analysis:
The job index for Mumbai at 1009 crossed the Jul-08 levels for the first time this month. Other key metros Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata also witnessed their indices at an elevated level with the Mar-11 index moving up by 7%, 5% and 3% over the Feb-11 index. Hiring activity in Pune and Hyderabad moved up by 7% and 4% respectively in Mar-11 over Feb-11, while Chennai maintained steady hiring levels.

Overall, the index seems to be showing a month on month increase indicating a positive hiring sentiment across most markets and industry sectors for the coming months.
