L&T director bags chemical industry leadership award

Mumbai, December 28, 2006: Mr. K. Venkataramanan, Member of the Board and President (Operations), Larsen & Toubro Limited, was conferred the prestigious Lala Shriram National Award for Leadership in Chemical Industry by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers at its annual convention "� CHEMCON in Bharuch on December 27.
 
The award lauds Mr. Venkataramanan's contribution in extending the boundaries of the chemical engineering profession in India, and setting globally accepted benchmarks in project engineering, execution and management. Under Mr Venkataramanan's leadership, L&T's Engineering & Construction Division has set up projects in the Middle East, Africa, Sri Lanka, South East Asia and Australia.
 
The Company has been cited as the only Indian organization with project execution capabilities of international caliber, and has made a major contribution to indigenizing India's oil and gas exploration sector by executing a number of the large well-head and process platforms currently deployed in Bombay High.
 
An alumnus of IIT, Delhi, Mr Venkataramanan said the field of chemical engineering provided an expanding canvas for the youth. Newer and better solutions continue to be developed and the challenge as well as the reward lay in successfully adopting these emerging technologies for industrial application.
 
He said that he accepted the 'Leadership in Chemical Industry Award' on behalf of his colleagues in L&T and the entire chemical engineering fraternity which would play an increasingly significant role in the country's industry and economy.
 
Background:
 
The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, was established in 1947, and is the apex professional society of chemical engineers in India.
 
Today, with 18,000 members on its roll, the Institute has emerged as an important national platform overseeing the interest of the academia and the industry in the multifarious fields of chemical engineering.
 
Its activities are spread across the country through a nationwide network comprising 40 Regional Centres and 52 Student Chapters.
