Low Base Shows High Growth of Auto Industry

The cumulative production data for April-February 2010 shows production growth of 24.34 percent over same period last year. Passenger vehicles production crossed 2 million and two wheelers production touched almost 9.5 million.

Domestic Sales
Passenger Vehicles segment during April-February 2010 grew at 26.13 percent over same period last year. Passenger Cars grew by 25.65 percent, Utility Vehicles grew by 22.87 percent and Multi Purpose Vehicles grew by 38.20 percent in this period.

The overall Commercial Vehicles segment registered positive growth at 35.52 percent during April-February 2010 as compared to the same period last year. Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) registered growth at 28.18 percent; Light Commercial Vehicles grew at 42.30 percent. However, Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicle sales during the period is still lower than 2006-07.

 

Three Wheelers sales recorded a growth rate of 26.35 percent in April-February 2010. While Passenger Carriers grew by 31.83 percent during April-February 2010, Goods Carriers grew at 8.51 percent.

Two Wheelers registered a growth of 24.58 percent during April-February 2010. Mopeds, Scooters and Motorcycles grew by 31.81 percent, 22.85 percent and 24.91 percent respectively.

Exports
During April-February 2010, overall automobile exports registered a growth rate of 16.09 percent.

Passenger Vehicles segment, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers segments grew by 34.42 percent, 11.70 percent and 11.57 percent respectively in this period. Commercial Vehicles, however, recorded negative growth of (-) 1.35 percent.
