Nasscom, the apex body of the Indian IT industry and CNBC-TV18, 1st in business worldwide, hosted the third edition of the most distinguished honours for excellence in IT application - ‘IT User Awards 2010’, in Mumbai on September 28, 2010. The ‘IT User Awards’, India’s first of its kind initiative, are conferred to organisations that have dedicated resources, capital, time and research to IT and its implementation. Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Information Technology and Communications, was the chief guest of the award ceremony while Ms. Sudha Pillai, Member Secretary, Planning Commission was the guest of honour. The evening also witnessed the presence of stalwarts in Indian IT Sector like Mr. Harsh Manglik, Chairman, Nasscom, amongst others.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Information Technology and Communications, said, “The award is necessary to recognize, applaud, award individuals, entrepreneurs to carry on good work. Our policy is directed to help every needy and with the help of technology millions of people can be reached. In India, our highest percentage of GDP is dedicated to IT sector. Irrespective of what happens in other countries, in India, we should be able to take up challenges. Our focus should be invert, more on domestic market. We, as government, are doing everything possible to encourage, help IT sector. Big organizations can also push and nurture smaller companies. Our plan is that by 2012, every panchayat in India will be given access to high speed broadband. The government has been very pro-active to bridge the gap between rural and urban, haves and have-nots with technology”.
Mr. Pilot also highlighted that IT software, BPO, KPO centres are doing excellent but hardware sector needed more focus. He said, “I urge everyone to start thinking about IT hardware sector. Lot has to be done to provide a platform to young people to showcase their abilities and talents. Only 40 percent people in India using mobiles have bank accounts. Through technology, we have to see the availability of banks in most parts of the country. That is the transformation that has to be seen. IT sector can be a game change!”
Sudha Pillai, Member Secretary, Planning Commission, added “The recognition and awarding will catalyze IT’s use in achieving strategic objectives. I believe that even the government cannot manage to function without IT. It is required for implementing agendas, and etc. To promote investment in IT and development of its infrastructure, government has taken the initiative of setting up IT townships. In future, we would like to see more and more inventions. We want to see such growth that almost everyone can use IT”.
Commenting on the awards, Suresh Venkat, Technology Editor, Network 18 said, ‘’Indian companies have maximised their efficiency through consumption of information technology. This has not only increased their productivity but also helped in synergizing operations and functional automations and creating new business models. Through ‘IT User Awards’ we aim to acknowledge the hard work of the various sectors that have progressed by using IT for their work and also to motivate others to join them.”

The winners were selected based on a robust multiphase methodology powered by The Nielsen Company. A jury comprising of Mr. S Ramadorai-Vice Chairman, TCS (Chair of Jury), Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala- IIT Chennai, Dr. Jai Menon- Group Director IT, Bharti Enterprises, Mr. B. SambaMurthy- Director IDRBT, ex-CMD Corporation Bank, Mr. Charles Assisi- Executive Editor, Forbes India, Ms. Neelam Dhawan- Managing Director, HP India, Mr. David Briskman- VP & Chief Information Officer, Ranbaxy & Mr. Pravir Vohra- Group CTO, ICICI Bank selected the winners after a comprehensive and in-depth survey.

IT User Awards Research Methodology:
The Nasscom – CNBC TV18 Awards are an acknowledged mark of recognizing enterprise excellence through adoption of Technology. This is so because the awards honorees are chosen through a combination of extensive research and an expert jury team, based on the information submitted in the nomination template. Each entry is judged on its merit and competitive positioning with other entries submitted.
This year as industries strive to come out of recessionary effects and look forwards to growth, the theme for IT User Awards 2010 is around IT being a business transformer or a 'game changer'. In short Enterprises who have shown foresight in technology investment as a tool for transforming the business environment by offering new products, entering new geographies, and offering customer delight will be recognized this year based on their nominations.
The detailed methodology consisted of two phases as listed below:
Phase I:
A) Initiation of the process of user awards by inviting a wide spectrum of people across companies and sectors to send nomination forms.
B) This process involved an extensive field exercise involving primary sessions to enable contact to maximal number of industry participants. This ensured a large number of nominations to enable a large coverage within industry respondents.
C) Each nomination received is categorized in major verticals or award categories such as telecom & teleservices, travel & logistics, automotive sector and so forth.
D) An initial shortlist was then prepared based on key inputs received through each of the nomination form.
E) This was further scrutinized through an exhaustive quantitative as well as qualitative sets of analysis based on pre-defined parameters to identify top nominations per sector.
F) Hence at the end of phase I, top 3 nominations were shortlisted in each vertical or award category.
Phase II:
G) Subsequent to short listing 3 top participants, detail In-depth interviews were held with the CIO/IT managers of each of the top 3 scoring enterprises to understand the intricacies and finer nuances of the IT implementation strategy of the enterprise.
H) They were evaluated on each of the evaluation criterion as outlined to gauge the impact their IT initiatives has had to make them worthy in each of the criteria.
I) A detailed write-up on individual implementations from top 3 scorers was shared with an eminent and neutral jury for the final selection.
J) This panel carried out an in depth evaluation and its confirmation to evaluation criteria based on these case studies to finalize a winner in each of award category.
K) Both stages in methodology were robust enough to iron out discrepancies and ensure an unbiased and neutral approach in determining the Nasscom CNBC TV18 Award Winner within each category.
