· Sah Hospital conducted two day workshop on Oculoplasty and Botox benefits in M.D.
Eyes, the most expressive feature of a human body contribute significantly to the total personality of a person and in an attempt to help people with eye disorders; Sah Hospital organized a two day workshop, where they addressed and demonstrated advanced treatment of Oculoplasty, with the help of Botox.
During the two day workshop, doctors demonstrated Botox injection technique and surgically treated Orbital tumor and Ptosis, which was shown live to the gathering.
Dr E R Mohan , Ex Director Orbit & Oculoplasty Unit in Shankar Netralaya, Chennai also conducted continuing medical education (CME) program on Oculoplasty.
Oculoplasty is a surgery of the eyelids, eyebrows or eye sockets. Oculoplasty surgery may be performed in order to improve function, comfort, and appearance. The eyelids and surrounding areas are extremely complex and delicate structures that are vital to the preservation of sight and are important features of a normal facial appearance.
Explaining the eye problems, Dr S K Sah, Ophthalmologist, Sah Hospital Varanasi said, “Ptosis is also called "drooping eyelid." It is caused by weakness of the muscle responsible for raising the eyelid, damage to the nerves that control those muscles, or looseness of the skin of the upper eyelids. While, an orbital tumor is any tumor that occurs within the orbit of the eye. The orbit is a bony housing in the skull about 2 inches deep that provides protection to the entire eyeball except the front surface. It is lined by the orbital bones and contains the eyeball, its muscles, blood supply, nerve supply, and fat.”
“While, today a lot of patients suffering from the condition of Blepharospasm, where an individual experiences an involuntary clenching of the muscles that control the eyelid, causing uncontrollable blinking which generally affects both eyes, get treated by Botox. Botox is an FDA-approved medicine which is widely used to temporarily relax the muscles. BOTOX is a purified protein that works by blocking overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions,” Dr Sah added.
Blepharospasm can diminish a patient's ability to perform everyday activities by interfering with their ability to see due to the lid blocking their eyes. This can progress from increased blinking to inability to open the eyelids, and finally, to functional blindness.
Botox therapy is accepted as a standard care for blepharospasm, and involves the injection of small therapeutic doses directly in the affected muscles around the eye to temporarily reduce the excessive muscle contractions.
