In an endeavor to spread awareness about prevention of liver disease and to emphasize the importance of treatment, patients and doctors from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals had come together to run at the Airtel Delhi Marathon.

According to the statistics, every 3 minutes a patient is added to the list of patients needing a transplant. More than 200,000 Indians require organ transplantation annually, an estimated 20,000 liver transplants are required per year in India.

Addressing this concern, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals will bring together patients from Nepal, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.  Motivating them throughout the marathon would be a team of doctors present, also participating to spread awareness on the need of organ donation.

Having undergone a complicated liver transplantation surgery three years back, fourteen year old Anil Lamsal, like others, is today leading a healthy and a normal life. “It is very heartening to see patients participating in the Marathon; Anil is doing very well in school and is very active on field. This initiative of spreading awareness on liver transplants is a small step towards our quest for creating awareness amongst the masses” said Dr. Subhash Gupta, Sr. Consultant, Liver Transplant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, who also took part in the marathon.

Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals has been a pioneer in the field of liver transplant surgeries in India and Liver transplantation is now an established mode of treatment for patients suffering from an end stage liver failure in India. Major strides have been made in surgical techniques, anesthesia, critical- care and monitoring over the last three decades, which have made this procedure a standard and an acceptable therapy. Such health parades accelerate the awareness drive on sensitive health issues and encourage healthy living.
