Servalakshmi Papers receives Forest Stewardship Council certificate

Servalakshmi Paper Ltd, engaged in the business of manufacturing printing and writing paper and newsprint, today announced that the company has been certified by Forest Stewardship Council certificate (FSC), an international certification and labelling system, that guarantees that paper and wood products carrying its label, come from environmentally and socially responsible sources. 

The FSC certification reflects the abilities of Servalakshmi, fulfilling the required compliances with highest environmental and social standards of International market. It will help the company to build the brand and reputation globally, as the certification acts as a mandatory requirement to access high environmentally sensitive markets like US and Europe regions, in which paper mills need to establish that the original source of product is from sustainable source.

“Our mill being strategically located at 72 km away from Tuticorin Port enjoys the geographical benefits for exports, thereby reducing the inland transportation cost compared to competitors. The FSC certification is a step ahead to further strengthen our foothold in exports. Our company intends to market around 20% of the production as exports initially and then increase the same to 30-40% within 2 years of period. We will target Middle East, South Africa, Europe, USA and South East Asia” He further added. 

The company also plans to use Eco-friendly Recycled paper as input raw material for making of Newsprint, Wood-free PWP grades, which would further improve the product demand in international market. 

Servalakshmi becomes the first south-based recycled paper mill to achieve the FSC certification. Through certification, the company gets an edge over 74 paper mills in operation in Tamil Nadu, contributing to 40 per cent of South India’s production of paper and 12 per cent of India’s paper production. 

In international market, the company currently caters to Saifi Trading in Sri Lanka, Vital Solutions in Singapore and Newthought Investments in Zimbabwe. Some of the leading domestic clients include Times of India, Kerela Kaumudi Private Limited, Deccan Herald, Sakal Paper Limited, Perfect Coated India Private Limited, Manipal Press Limited, Mehra Computer system Limited, Arunodaya, etc. 

According to Indian Papers Manufacturing Association (IPMA), the Indian Paper manufacturing Industry, which is highly power and capital intensive, is broadly divided into paper, paperboards, and newsprint. The Indian Paper Industry accounts for about 1.6% of the world’s production of paper and paperboard. The estimated turnover of the industry is Rs 25,000 crore (USD 5.95 billion) approximately and its contribution to the nation is around Rs. 2918 crore (USD 0.69 billion). The industry provides employment to more than 0.12 million people directly and 0.34 million people indirectly.

Servalakshmi Paper Limited was incorporated in the year 2005 by Servall Group. The company carries the production through the state of art production unit located at Kodaganallur Village, Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The plant is located in an area covering about 340 acres of land that has a total production capacity of 90,000 tonnes per annum.
