The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body established under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No. XXXVIII of 1949) for the regulation of the profession of Chartered Accountants in India. Growing in terms of numbers, skills and utilities as well as in gaining recognition from society as a vital nation builder, the ranks of CA's have swollen from a mere 1700 in 1949 to approx 1.60 lac making it the 2nd largest accounting body in the world. Globally recognized for its high standards, the Institute has come a long way from 257 students enrolled in the Institute in 1949 to as many as 6.20 lac students on roll today. ICAI has 5 regional councils, 125 branches, 34 central level committees. The Indian CA has transcended boundaries and many of them are working abroad supported by 21 chapters overseas.
The Institute through its Committee for Members in Industry organizes campus placement programme for the benefit of newly qualified Chartered Accountants twice every year. The first phase of the programme started on 4th of March, 2010 at 5 cities namely Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. It will continue till 10th March, 2010.
After conclusion of the first phase, the next phase of campus interviews would be conducted during 23rd-26th March 2010 at different centres including Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Indore, Ernakulam, Kanpur, Nagpur, Pune, Ludhiana, Surat, Hyderabad, Jaipur.
Till now 72 companies are participating in the programme seeking more than 1500 Chartered Accountants. Overwhelming response is received from all the centres. A total of 2870 candidates have registered for the Campus Interviews.
Prominent organizations including public limited companies, Public Sector Undertakings, Banks, etc are participating in this mega event. To name a few - BPCL, Coal India, HCL, Infosys, GMR, L&T, Morgan Stanley, SBI, Shipping Corporation, Tata Sons, TVS Motors, UTI, Vedanta Resources, Wipro, and so on are participating in the event.
Entities have selected Chartered Accountants and have made lucrative offers. More than 900 candidates have already been selected in the placement programme. In all 11 candidates have been offered International assignments. The best offer is made by Olam International to 6 candidates which is more than Rs. 70 lakhs per annum ($ 1.5 lakh). For the domestic posting, the best offer is made by Axis Bank and ITC Ltd. The response given by the entities participating in recruitment has been very encouraging.
Tremendous response has been received to the recruitment and selection process and has proven beyond doubt the need and the acceptance of the Chartered Accountants in the Industry. It has allayed the fears of impact of global recession on Indian Economy.
