Two young men who had acute knee problems and were hardly able to walk a few years ago are totally cured today as a result of ACI (Autologous Cartilage Implantation) treatment and will run in the Mumbai Marathon 2011.

One of them, Mustaq Shaikh, an electrician from Malad was diagnosed with cartilage defects in his knee joints at a very early age. Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the reputed orthopedist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital treated him using ACI procedure two years ago. Today, Mustaq is fully recovered and is gearing up to run the Mumbai Marathon.

The second person is Deepak Bhatose, a 17-year-old student from Kalyan, who was earlier advised to have total knee replacement surgery. However, Dr. Patil of

Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital who has used the ACI procedure on many patients advised him to undergo the ACI procedure and Deepak has totally overcome his knee problem and would be participating in the Mumbai Marathon 2011.

The ACI procedure involves regeneration of patients’ own cartilage and thereby avoiding total knee replacement surgery.

ACI surgery was first done in 1980s and launched in India two years ago by RMS – Regrow. It is now practiced by all orthopedic surgeons across hospitals in India.

Worldwide, over 100,000 patients have been treated with this procedure and are leading good quality lives. In India too, we are seeing more and more examples of patients with painful knees benefiting from ACI treatment.
