"Our party's popularity is growing and we are emerging to be the only alternative to the misrule of the Congress," Mahanta told a press conference here, the first since his re-election as president of the party.

"We should strengthen the grass root level and a week long meeting will be held here from May 23 to discuss means to revitalise the the district committees."

Mahanta, also a former chief minister, denied allegations by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi that his government had failed to pay salaries to government employees. "This allegation is wrong. Yes, there was some delay because funds were released late due to the then budget session ... But ultimately the salaries were released."

Presenting a fact sheet, Mahanta claimed the actual expenditure in the annual plan of Assam was lower than many states which was contrary to what claimed his successor Gogoi.

"The figure was Rs 9000 crore in 2011-12 while other states had much higher figures," he said.
