"After being asked, their mobile service providers informed them that services have been discontinued on instruction from the cyber crime department of Kolkata police," APDR general secretary Dhiraj Sengupta told a press conference here.

The police informed them that FIRs have been filed against some of them at the Jorasanko police station with the allegation that they misused their mobile phones, Sengupta said.

He described the action as arbitrary, discriminatory and amounting to violation of civil liberties as well as consumer rights and human rights.

The service providers, Sengupta said, did not provide copies of the instructions from the police.

Stating that the nature of the step was far from clear, he said that it has been taken for dissenting various government actions in the past.
