Autorickshaws to follow rules

"We have laid down several rules for autorickshaws which the trade unions have agreed to follow. The police will act tough against violation of the rules," Transport Minister Madan Mitra said here after a meeting with autorickshaw unions.

He said I-cards have been mandatory for autorickshaw drivers which should be collected from trade union bodies.

Autorickshaws would not be permitted to take more than four passengers and would have to follow specified routes, while some decorative lights would be allowed on the three-wheelers instead of a total ban on them.

Hiking fares unnilateraly by auto drivers would not be allowed while the government would construct stands in specified areas.

 

Mitra said that the operators have been allowed time till Kalipuja for installing high-security number plates.

The police have been asked to assess the number of autorickshaws and drivers.
