Morcha's state general secretary Pramila Singh alleged that there was a spurt in atrocities on women, particularly at a state-run women's home at Gurap in Hooghly district where inmates were subjected to sexual abuse and the Morcha deplore and protest it.

"The state social welfare department is ignorant of its responsibilities leading to spurt in atrocities on women with law and order steadily worsening," Singh alleged addressing the demonstration at College Square.

The Morcha also criticised higher education minister Bratya Basu for being 'indifferent' in solving the problems in the educational sector.
