Researchers say that the time spent in front of the 'idiot-box' is five years more than the combined length the country spends shopping, playing sport and in bed.

Three of those years is astonishingly spent watching repeats or what people consider to be "rubbish" programmes, the 'Daily Express' reported.

As many as three-quarters of Brits watch the same festive movies every Christmas.

Their family life now centres around the couch, which has replaced the kitchen as the most popular place for dinner, to avoid missing favourite shows.

One in 10 eats every meal in front of the television, with the average Briton having four TV dinners per week.
