Deer rescued

was injured after being chased by dogs was rescued from a village on the fringes of a protected forest in Odisha's Kendrapara district.

Residents of Pitapata village saved the deer yesterday, Divisional Forest Officer, Rajnagar Mangrove (Wildlife) Forest Division, Manoj Kumar Mahapatra said.

Deer straying into settlements has become common in these parts with there being instances of villagers killing them, officials said.

The number of deer has been growing at a rapid rate in the recent years. Though regular census is yet to take place, over 5,000 spotted deer could be found in the swampy wetland and mangrove forests in these parts.
