"There is a need for greater co-operation between the public and the government in providing a larger security umbrella for our society. It is important to accept that certain threats exist and (there is a need to) find human and technological solutions to counter terrorism," Amitabh Rajan, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) said.

"To make our cities secure, security of our neighbourhood is very important. Security of neighbourhood is all about smartness, alertness and keeping an eagle's eye (by the people) as challenges are evolving every passing day," Rajan said.

He was speaking at a conference 'Securing Mumbai' organised by Security Watch India, a non-profit organisation that addresses issues in the space of the relatively new homeland security sector.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh sought to highlight that merely installing CCTVs all over would not make cities safe and secure.

"There is a need to train the community and spread awareness. There is a need for capacity and character building and these should be incorporated at schools and colleges. It is impossible to implement the security models of other countries in India. I feel that Indian policemen are the best in the entire world," Singh elaborated.

On security challenges of the city and ways to make it safe, Singh said, "Vulnerable people are exploited by anti-national movements. It is very difficult to monitor and close all entry and exit routes to a city and therefore the threat remains."

"City police wish to train and build the character of policemen further and create awareness among students by its new initiative. To be safe we must be selfish and be alert to threats by all means," Singh said, explaining city police department's proposed initiative. (More)
