Athawale and Tawde courted arrest in Chembur and were taken to Trombay police station and then released, party sources said.
RPI has been demanding the 12.5 acre India United Mill land for constructing the memorial of the Dalit icon and had threatened to stage demonstrations during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Mumbai in August.
Athawale recently met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and requested him to transfer the mill land owned by National Textile Corporation (NTC) for the project. During the meeting Athawale presented the concept plan of the memorial prepared by architect Shashi Prabhu.
