Liberation Tigers militant was killed in a joint operation by the police and army in Assam's Karbi Anglong district today.

Acting on a tip-off that five militants were in the area, an operation was launched at Ronghari village under Santipur police station of Bokajan sub-division leading to an encounter in which the militant was killed, police sources said.

The others managed to escape.

An AK-56 rifle, a magazine, several rounds of live ammunition were recovered, the sources said.

Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police B B Chetri told PTI that a section of KPLT cadres were wanting to surrender and had contacted village headmen.

"Discussions are on and we are hopeful that they will soon join the mainstream," he said.

Chetri said operations would be intensified against militants who did not surrender.

The KPLT had suffered two major blows recently with its 'commander-in-chief' Blain Hanse being killed by a cadre on May two while it's chairman Nilip Ingti was killed in a joint operation by the army and police on April 19.
