While the date of his birth and death were both July one, the state government decided to advance it as it fell on a Sunday this year.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who garlanded the portrait of Roy along with Speaker Biman Mukherjee and other members, said that the there was no harm in advancing the day as more people could be present compared to a Sunday.
Criticising Left Front members, she said that they did not show any respect to former chief ministers like P C Sen, Prafulla Ghosh and Ajoy Mukherjee all of whom died ingloriously.
"We will definitely observe the birthday of former chief minister Jyoti Basu," she added.
