"Marandi was the instigator and arrested on the charge of inciting violence in the town", Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sudhakar Jena said.

In protest against the arrest of Marandi, a former Lok Sabha MP who represented Mayurbhanj constituency, JMM has called for Mayurbhanj district bandh on Monday.

Marandi's younger brother Subodh was allegedly attacked by some ruling BJD workers in a bus stand here yesterday and later a counter attack was also launched by JMM activists.

Subodh had lodged an FIR in the town police station last night against BJD workers who had attacked him.

Meanwhile, in protest against the attack on Subodh, a large number of JMM activists today took out a motor-cycle rally in the town carrying lathis, bows, arrows and other weapons.

The activists in the rally were held and taken to Laxmiposhi, about 10 km from here, and Marandi was arrested from his residence in Murgabadi area here, Jena said.

Condemning the police action against him and other party activists, Marandi alleged that the ruling BJD workers were spreading terror in the district.
