"Without your (industry's) participation, you will adopt one monument and become a part of the 'Clean India' movement," the Tourism Minister said at a function organised by Quality Council of India here.
"We say that India is incredible, our 'Incredible India' brand is so strong in the whole world...But how will it become credible when we cannot ensure quality service? So I have come here to request you, to try and persuade you to join that campaign," he said.
Sahay said that he had no explanation to offer when a journalist in Berlin had asked him why Indian tourist destinations were dirty.
"From Taj to Benaras wherever we go, the most important tourist destinations (are dirty), even our beaches...I had no answer."
Sahay said that as part of 'Clean India' movement all business houses should adopt one monument and ensure that the area around it remains clean.
