Set up on five acres at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore, 'Rabindratirtha' houses a large central auditorium, exhibition space, film and music archive, art gallery, library, cinema hall on the land given by Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO).
"One will find another Santiniketan at Rabindratirtha," Banerjee said in her inaugural address, adding that it was set up to carry forward thoughts and philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore.
She announced the formation of a seven-member task force to oversee its management.
Stating that her plan was to set up a wide 'Rabindraangan' encompassing Rabindra Sadan and Nandan complex in the city, she said considering the delay in receiving financial grant from the Centre, a decision was taken to construct the 'Rabindratirtha'.
A bronze statue of Rabindranath was erected at the centre of the large lake in the complex.
The plan of the project was conceptualised by renowned painter Jogen Chowdhury.
Banerjee thanked HIDCO and the urban development department for completing the project within a record seven to eight months.
Dormitories for boys and girls had been constructed for doing research work on Tagore at this centre and an international conference centre would come up at the complex in line with Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi, he said.
The inauguration was attended by many singers, painters, artists, Tagore researchers and the ministers of state cabinet.
