Of its total sanctioned strength of 5,000, the actual strength is 3,899 and the number of vacancies are 1,101, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said in reply to a written question in Lok Sabha.
The vacancies are at the top levels of Special Directors, Joint Directors, Deputy Inspector General and Senior Superintendents of Police, to the level of Constables.
"The occurrence of vacancies and their filling up is an ongoing process. The number keeps on varying depending on the induction, promotion, retirement and repatriation of the officers.
"With effective use and optimal deployment of existing personnel, the vacancies have not affected the performance of the CBI adversely," he said.
The number of vacancies at various levels keeps changing from time to time. It is the endeavour of central government as well as CBI to fill up vacant posts expeditiously," the Minister said.
Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, said various steps are being taken to fill the vacancies in the probe agency.
Director Generals of central armed police forces and chief secretaries of state governments have been requested by CBI to spare officers of requisite seniority to join the CBI on deputation basis, he said.
