The Kerala government today decided to supply free 'Onam kit' with food articles and other provisions to 1.36 lakh tribal families across the state during the Onam festival.

The government has earmarked Rs 8.50 crore for the purpose, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a cabinet meeting here.

The festival will be celebrated next month.

On government's decision to revive Attappady Hills Area Development Society (AHADS) in tribal hamlets of Palakkad district from where infant deaths were reported, he said Rs 35 lakh has been sanctioned to start its work.

The decision was to ensure that food and other cereals reach adivasi settlements, he said.

A meeting convened by Chandy recently decided to revive the activities of AHADS, which were stagnant as Japanese aid was stopped.
