The policemen, who had been alerted about a group of carjackers travelling in a stolen vehicle, tried to stop the car at a check post in Sector I-9 of Islamabad this afternoon.
The occupants of the car fired at the policemen, killing an assistant sub-inspector, officials said.
The thieves later abandoned the car and fled.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with the crime, officials said.
