1 dead as heat wave sweeps Gujarat

A 48-year-old woman died today even as the city and parts of the state are gripped by extreme heat wave with the average maximum temperature touching 44 degree Celsius in many cities, causing huge discomfort to people.

"The woman undergoing treatment for heat stroke died in the civic-run Vadilal Sarabhai Hospital in the city," a statement from the health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

It said at least eight persons were affected due to heat stroke and are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Entire state is in the grip of extreme heat conditions with many parts witnessing the mercury soaring to 44 degree Celsius.
 

As per the meteorological department, Surendranagar city remained hottest with temperature touching 45.3 degree Celsius, followed by Ahmedabad, Deesa and Amreli where maximum temperature touched 44.5 degrees during the day.

Life in Saurashtra region was also affected by intense heat wave with Rajkot sizzling at 44.4 degree Celsius, as per the statement.

The mercury soared to 43.4 degrees Celsius in Bhuj of Kutch district while state capital Gandhinagar and Vadodara town recorded temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius, respectively.

As per the short-term forecast of Met department, the heat conditions will prevail for at least three more days.
