1 killed, 12 injured as drunk man runs SUV through sleeping

One person was killed and 12 were injured when a 30-year-old inebriated man ran his SUV over them while they were sleeping on a road divider in Kashmere Gate area in North Delhi last night.

The incident took place at around 10:15 PM. The accused, identified as Rishi Kumar has been arrested. Medical report confirmed he was drunk when the incident took place.

All the 13 victims were migrant labourers.

"Kumar, who was accompanied by his sister-in-law, was driving his car from north west Delhi's Jahangirpuri area to West Vinod Nagar in East Delhi when he lost control of the car on reaching near Nigambodh Ghat U turn and ran over the sleeping labourers," said a senior police official.
 

"We received a call at 10:15 PM. The victims were sent to four nearby hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

The deceased was later identified as Ikhraj a native of Nepal. Four others were treated for fractures, police said adding most of the other injured were later discharged as they suffered minor injuries.

Rishi Kumar is a property dealer in West Delhi and was going to his residence in East Delhi's Vinod Nagar.

The locals caught Kumar soon after the incident, thrashed him and also vandalized the vehicle.

A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered at Kashmere gate police station. The car has been seized by the police.
