A PWD engineer was killed and 16 labourers were injured when an under-construction bridge collapsed at Kolmesalgre village in Williamnagar area of East Garo Hills district today.

District administration sources said Junior Engineer, PWD (Roads), Lemingson Marak, who was due to retire from service next year, was killed on the spot when the bridge crashed on him.

Most of the labourers have sustained fracture injuries but nobody was critical, the sources said, adding that some of them were taken to Tura Hospital in West Garo hills district.

It appears that a slab being cast since yesterday was on a weak support structure leading to the collapse, the sources said.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to probe the causes that led to the incident, they added.
