1 killed as bus catches fire after falling in pit

A passenger was today killed and 23 other were injured after a bus caught fire when it came in touch with an electric wire as it rammed into a tree fell in a pit near Jaspura village here.

The incident took place when the UP State Road Transport Corporation bus with 26 passengers on board was on its way to Hamirpur from Banda.

The steering of the bus failed near the village and the driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell into a pit after ramming a tree, SP Banda Shripati Mishra told PTI.

"It then came in touch with an electricity cable and caught fire," he said.
 

As soon as the bus fell into the pit, the driver and all the passengers barring one man jumped out of the vehicle.

"However, the lone passenger in the bus was charred to death," the Banda SP said.

Fifteen passengers were sent to the district hospital while eight others, who had sustained minor injuries, were discharged after administering first aid, he said.
